Director

Steve KerbelSteven Kerbel is an independent education consultant in the Greater Washington DC area, and has been involved in Jewish education, formal and informal, youth group, camp, day school and congregational school for the last 30 years. Steve’s clients include the Center for Israel Education in Atlanta, where Steve serves as a facilitator. Most recently he served as Director of Education for Congregation B’nai Tzedek in Potomac, Maryland. Before this, he served as the inaugural Retreat Director of Capital Camps & Retreat Center in Waynesboro, PA. Prior to working at Capital Camps, Steve was Director of Education of Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase for seven years. Steve taught in the Florence Melton Adult Mini School for over twelve years, teaching all of the core courses but primarily focused on the Dramas of Jewish Living. Steve has also been a full-time faculty member at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville. Among Steve’s avocations, he facilitates wine tastings featuring Israeli wines and teaches about the geography of diversity of Israel through its wines and wine makers.

Rebecca Leavey

Rebecca (Becky) Newman Leavey is a communications professional with a background in directing strategic communication campaigns for non-profit, community, and media organizations. With a degree in communications from Boston University, she spent a decade as a television producer in both the Boston and Washington, DC areas. She transferred her skillset to Moment Magazine, where she served as the Director of Marketing and Community Outreach for seven years.

Becky began with the Haberman Institute in Fall 2017, and currently is the Program and Communications Director. In this role she has been able to marry her passion for Jewish education with her background in communications to help provide area adults with high-quality in-depth encounters with Jewish thought, history, and culture.

She lives in Bethesda, MD with her husband, two daughters, and a sweet little shih tzu.
