Rabbi Richard Camras recently became Rabbi Emeritus of Hamakom in Los Angeles, following more than three decades of congregational leadership. He served for twenty-four years as Senior Rabbi of Shomrei Torah Synagogue and then as Co-Senior Rabbi of Hamakom for three years, helping lead the successful merger of two thriving congregations into a new and vibrant Jewish community.
A passionate advocate for lifelong Jewish learning, Richard founded the Conejo/West Valley Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning more than twenty years ago, building it as a unique consortium of twelve synagogues, schools, and Jewish organizations. Under his leadership, the program became a model for collaborative, community-wide adult education. He has also served on Melton's Rabbinic Advisory Committee.
For twenty-six years, Richard has served as an Adjunct Professor of Rabbinics at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University. He is also a faculty member of the Center for Contemporary Mussar, where he teaches Jewish ethics and spiritual growth to adult learners.
Ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1992, he previously served as Associate Rabbi of Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore.
